Social Democrats support decriminalisation of drugs for personal use

The Social Democrats’ drugs policy was updated quietly in March of this year without any formal announcement. The updated policy, however, solidifies the party’s support for drug decriminalisation.

Their policy, which is available on their website, states that “in line with international best-practice, a policy of decriminalisation should be pursued in respect of the possession of drugs for personal consumption”

“In general, using moral judgement as a basis for shaping social policy creates shame and stigma. The criminalisation of what we know to be a health issue means that the bulk of the negative fallout lands on those already marginalised.”

The Social Democrats list five priorities for drug policy on the updated web page:

“1. Decriminalisation of drugs for personal consumption

2. Increased funding for treatment and health services

3. Better supports for Community Drug Services

4. Improved education and prevention campaigns around drugs

5. Additional police resources aimed at drug dealers who focus their attention on children”

The Social Democrats do not endorse the legalisation or regulation of cannabis but “believe that an expert Commission to examine the possible legalisation, regulation and taxation of cannabis should be established.”
